The push to reauthorize the Patriot Act has begun, with key leaders in Congress pressing for an accelerated process that offers almost no significant change to this flawed legislation.

Bills emerging from House committees this week include amendments that would make virtually the entire statute a permanent part of our law, rather than allowing its more sweeping provisions to expire, as originally approved by Congress. A House vote could come as early as next week.
