American Civil Liberties Union Records Processing Completed

The Mudd Library is pleased to announce that the final two series of the (ACLU) records have been processed, and that the entire colĀ­lecĀ­tion has been addressed is now availĀ­able to the pubĀ­lic. These mateĀ­riĀ­als join ACLU records long held at the Mudd Library: and . As a whole, this colĀ­lecĀ­tion docĀ­uĀ­ments the civil libĀ­erĀ­ties organizationā€™s work in areas includĀ­ing civil rights, chilĀ­dren and womenā€™s rights, freeĀ­dom of speech (and all First AmendĀ­ment quesĀ­tions), due process, the right to priĀ­vacy, and church-state sepĀ­aĀ­raĀ­tion issues, and this third subĀ­group covĀ­ers the years between 1975 and 2000 preĀ­domĀ­iĀ­nantly. The records are of vital hisĀ­torĀ­iĀ­cal and culĀ­tural imporĀ­tance to the nation, and we are grateĀ­ful that the work on these records was .

Founded in 1920, the ACLUā€™s misĀ­sion is ā€œto defend and preĀ­serve the indiĀ­vidĀ­ual rights and libĀ­erĀ­ties guarĀ­anĀ­teed to every perĀ­son in this counĀ­try by the ConĀ­stiĀ­tuĀ­tion and laws of the United States.ā€ The group has been inteĀ­gral in myrĀ­iad landĀ­mark court cases since its incepĀ­tion, and the colĀ­lecĀ­tion of new mateĀ­riĀ­als housed at Mudd conĀ­sists, notably, of records from the ReproĀ­ducĀ­tive FreeĀ­dom Project, the Womenā€™s Rights Project, the Robert Bork Supreme Court nomĀ­iĀ­naĀ­tion hearĀ­ings, the Iran-Contra affair, and Texas v. JohnĀ­son (the 1990 flag-burning case). The newly availĀ­able records also include over 300 boxes from the ACLUā€™s , which hanĀ­dled many imporĀ­tant civil rights cases

AdriĀ­ane HanĀ­son, who manĀ­aged the proĀ­cessĀ­ing of the new ACLU mateĀ­riĀ­als, began in June 2010, and with the help of sevĀ­eral PrinceĀ­ton stuĀ­dents, she invenĀ­toĀ­ried and processed 2,500 linĀ­ear, in Mudd Libraryā€™s hisĀ­tory. Mudd Libraryā€™s entire ACLU colĀ­lecĀ­tion, which is its largest and most used, now spans about 4,200 linĀ­ear feet.
