Establishing Legal Parent-Child Relationships
The ACLU works in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.
If you've been discriminated against based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status, the ACLU wants to hear about it.

What's at Stake
When LGBT people form families with children, like all families they need the security of legally recognized parent-child relationships. But all too often, LGBT parents face barriers to creating legal ties with their children. The ACLU advocates to ensure that LGBT parents are able to establish legal parent-child relationships with their children. We’re also committed to ensuring that diverse family structures are respected and that children’s relationships with the people who have functioned as their parents are protected.
