Coreas v. Bounds

Location: Maryland
Last Update: March 27, 2020

What's at Stake

On March 24, 2020, the ACLU National Prison Project, ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, the ACLU of Maryland, the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, and the Capital Area Immigrants Rights (CAIR) Coalition filed Coreas v. Bounds on behalf of immigrants detained at Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in Maryland.

The lawsuit seeks the release of detainees who, because of age or preexisting medical condition, are at especially high risk for serious illness or death in the event of a COVID-19 infection. The ACLU is calling for the immediate release of the plaintiffs on the basis that their continued detention would pose sufficient danger such as to violate their constitutional right to safety in government custody, and a violation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
