Bio
Sophia Yapalater () is the Legal Assistant in IRP's New York office. She graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Comparative American Studies focusing in urban health care inequality. Her interest in immigrants' rights was solidified when she lived in Tucson, AZ for her semester away as a student with the Earlham Border Studies Program. During this time, she engaged in an intensive study of border and migration issues while working with a humanitarian aid organization assisting recently repatriated migrants in Nogales, Mexico. She also has an interest in HIV/AIDS health care accessibility and has worked at community health clinics as a harm reduction and HIV intervention specialist and in researching the effectiveness of outreach programs. Before joining the ACLU, she was a Fulbright Fellow in Turkey, where she taught English to first year university students.
